Marije, his wife, Bert, I got last night (dated April 10, 2002) an e-mail on April 1 that Bill is deceased to his lung cancer. How things have happened so fast I do not know. On March 9 Marije mailed me (the week before I had spoken by telephone Bert and he was full of optimism and happy when) that scans had shown no cancer was just sat by the effects / side effects of chemotherapy (bone loss) a moved up to spinal pain caused because there were pinched nerves. According to Bert Marije was the week of March 12 it will be operated in a clinic in Germany. This is an excerpt from that e-mail dated March 9, 2002:

Bert operation for Monday in Hanover on his back. It appears from many studies that there is a pinched nerve is hit because his spine is pressed together. The surgery takes about two hours and he must be at least 10 days in the hospital. Personally I think there may be a little more.

Then I heard nothing until last night that sad message. Marije I hope our next few weeks the last part of the story to tell so we get more clarity how despite all the optimistic messages might be going wrong.
