Yttrium-90 Radioembolisatie microspheren of unresectable liver tumors (HCC - primary liver cancer) shows similar durability and overall survival than TACE - Trans-Arterial Chemo Embolisation . This study shows a retropostpectieve two different studies included. Yttrium-90 is also in the UMC - Utrecht applied. See under irradiation in alphabetical list in intestinal cancers.
The median survival in the two studies were compared and 11.5 months for patients treated with Yttrium-90 and 8.5 months for those in the study with the TACE group. But a further analysis showed that in the Yttrium -90 group patients is less severe or less advanced disease had better say. Adjusted lifetime showed the same efficacy between TACE and Yttrium-90 groups.
The study compared the results with 691 patients receiving cisplatin-based TACE - chemoembolisatie between 1992 and 2000 and 99 patients had been treated with Yttrium-90 microspheres between 2000 and 2005.
TACE was, where possible, repeated every eight to 12 weeks, while internal hepatic radiation with Yttrium-90 was only given a second dose if there was progressive disease.
Complete tumor response was similar and very low (3% -5%) in both groups.
Although the temporary fatigue and appetite loss were the main negative effects after chemoembolisatie the researchers note that the need for multiple treatments was a major inconvenience for patients.
When comparing the clinical results of these two treatments, "the risk and inconvenience" of repeated hospital chemoembolisaties be compared against the benefit of the limited number of treatments in an outpatient setting for Yttrium-90 "write the authors.
Based on these and similar results of the two treatments, the researchers conclude that a risk-benefit analysis between the two treatment options, treatment with Yttrium-90 offers an excellent option for palliative care. "
