Wigs & prostheses: a correspondence

Jacqueline Doorenbos and Lian Hielkema, Wigs & prostheses: a correspondence (Roosendaal: Uitgeverij Boekenbent, 2004). 164 pp. ISBN 90-77339-82-5. € 11.95.

This book is about breast cancer. However, it is rather a Merry than a depressing book. Above all, it is practical and sober.

The book contains the email correspondence of two women who had breast cancer almost at the same time. They exchange experiences and support each other. How do you deal with the side effects of chemotherapy? When you let your hair shave off? A wig and a prosthesis, how that feels? How do you deal with the fatigue that are so characteristic of this disease?
The writers are incorrigible optimists. They help each other through difficult moments going with uplifting words or a crazy story. Not only the direct consequences of the disease are addressed, but also daily topics like family, work, hobbies and study. Life goes on, finally.
Find the writers had prepared them sick, over a year after their diagnosis was made. They do not look more symmetrical, they must regularly on control, and sometimes worry. But otherwise they have the wire again arrested. And they still emailing.
