Updated December 21, 2009: Dirk van den Boogaard was in October 2007 he told an inoperable brain tumor had a glioblastoma multiforme grade IV . Dirk could have palliative radiotherapy and chemotherapy have - Temodal but that was it. As Teun van Vliet , a fellow villager had good results with a treatment with hyperthermia and dendritic cell therapy in the Medical Center Cologne are Dirk and his wife Mildred, also went there. Summer 2009 went very well with Dirk. Dirk seemed to clinical cancer. But now a new scan has shown yet again that there is a recurrence or whether it has not been completely gone. Dirk has in recent months had no further treatment but today 21 December that a scan showed there is still something. Dirk said his treatment in Cologne will pick up again because up until now been very successful. Furthermore, the Erasmus Medical Center presented him with a Phase II study to join with Avastin and chemo. But more about Dirk and Mildred would take some thought.
Dirk van den Boogaard

Survivor of inoperable brain tumors
Glioblastoma multiforme (grade IV)

Robert says (March 2009) in images of the scan in March 2009 and February 2008:
The tumor sat here and here, this whole area. And on the other hand, here and here. And you see it's all gone. There is no tumor activity, no more edema. If you see a scan edema it is white. And most scans were with him that this whole area, so everything here, this whole area was white with edema and tumor activity. And now you see nowhere edema. The structure has come back nicely, everything is back in the midline so. And it is very likely that our experience is very likely that there will not have a relapse.

This scan result seems surprising since October 2007 when Dirk at the Erasmus Medical Center was told that he had a large inoperable brain seemed lost everything. Rarely if ever anyone recovering from a glioblastoma multiforme grade IV. Yet it seems that with the additional treatments with hyperthermia and dendritic cell therapy in the Medical Center Cologne is for Dirk and Mildred has a future again.
Dirk says (March 2009):
That time is now as a heavy dark blanket behind me and I'll look back and can again and again I dare to look ahead. Literally and figuratively, it is summer again.
Comment Text 2:
As in October 2007 with an inoperable brain tumor is detected Dirk Dirk gets even palliative radiation and then chemotherapy in the form of Temodal. According to his oncologist is a cure for glioblastoma multiforme grade IV is not possible. Most, Dirk Temodal with a life extension of up to one year to expect.
But Dirk wants more.
Dirk said on images from November 2007 in Cologne with Teun include:
I have a glioma, which is just going through my brain, so basically all wrong. I'm going to gather just a few months. Extra life. Extra time. I have a good feeling. So. Your enemy attacks your own body. So I actually see. The theory is correct, I just. If something is that it can, it's your own body. It's your immune system is weakened. Look better, I think a great story, but extra time is nice.
Comment Text 3:
Through a sister of Teun van Vliet, Dirk and Teun his fellow villagers, is Dirk Teun that much has benefited from a combination treatment of hyperthermia and dendritic cell therapy. And Teun had a glioblastoma multiforme which oncologists have claimed that he never would heal them. Teun has by now been over 2 years clinical cancer.
Dirk because health insurance will not reimburse friends and family set a foundation for Dirk to allow the treatment to follow in Cologne.
Sister says (May / June 2008):
When we heard were his friends sit down together and have it organized and in the back and did a spinning marathon held. So hot right?
Dirk says: yes
Sister says: And that's just been fantastic. There was just goosebumps.
Dirk says: and
Sister says: And yes. People across his permanent sympathetic. That this is possible. That's fantastic. And he is working hard for himself. Along with Mildred. If you see this. They are really two biggies.

Brother says (May / June 2008):
When we heard the news that Dirk was incurable his friends have taken the initiative to take the bull by the horns to tackle. There may be more opportunities abroad. Now it was arrested. From there, there is a foundation that is so money is collected. His real friends have done. There is money collected and the money will also include the treatment paid for it here. We are to this day grateful for everybody. And he himself is obviously the most positive of all of us. He pulls us all get through it. It is also positive.
Dirk makes a joke during Teun met in November 2007.:
Sister! Night Nurse!
Comment Text 3:
Dirk begins in late October 2007 in Cologne with the treatments of hyperthermia and dendritic cell therapy. Dirk remains under the control of Temodal used by oncologists in the Netherlands. Dirk also follows a non-toxic cancer therapy ..
Mildred says (May / June 2008):
He has had regular treatment in the Daniel den Hoed. radiotherapy . Chemo. He also gets twice a week at the Preventive Medical Center a vitamin C infusion. With ozone treatment , and also added support for the liver. Especially in the days of the chemo. And I think that all in all works very well

Comment Text 3:
February 2008 appears on scans that there is stable disease, but no visible improvement. Dirk feels physically but not worse. He remains optimistic.
Dirk says (May / June 2008):
Yes it is actually quite good. I'm stable. And in my case, yes, I experience as very positive. And what I have heard the last scan is that he is quiet like. This is also beneficial in my case given the nature of the tumor. So I'm very positive towards a possible future treatments with Dr. Gorter here because I feel that it surely paid off eventually.
Mildred says (May / June 2008):
No it's not worse with him. I've seen him look worse. This is how the action is still very difficult. I'll help him remember things and it is also bad. But sometimes I feel that difference. One day it's worse than the other. I think it's not as bad in the beginning that gives me and him some rest.
Kees says, so there is still hope?
Mildred says: Hope for a long time. It is also stated by Dr. Gorter, we're not healing, it is virtually impossible but we are going for a long time with quality. And that's certainly the case with him. Yes I'm satisfied.
Comment Text 4:
It is in the course of 2008 with Dirk getting better physically and in May shows a scan that there is a clear improvement over the scan of February. The treatments are less intensive in Cologne in August, the Daniel den Hoed a new scan. The oncologists say that because there is deterioration of the situation. There were new metastases but Dr. Gorter disputes this.
Robert Gorter says (September 2008) in area of hospital radiologist in Cologne):
Here is a scan of Dirk van den Boogaard and this scan is from February 15, 2008. And one of the main compartment, one of the key images from the scan here, the tumor both here on the left and on the right clearly expanding, a large solid tumor with edema also a lot here and here. On this side a little less but still a great place, about one third to nearly half of the hemisphere, the brain region that is filled with edema.
So this is the scan taken six months later on August 4, 2008, and here with a similar cross-section of the brains that you see here are the ventricles, the heart of the brain that are filled with fluid and what is left of the tumor. That is much smaller with here is a big uitstolping to suppress the ventricle, but see that here the median line is practically back to normal and the quantity is less edema. It's not gone but I must say it is not only a stabilizing but also improving the tumor size and impact on the surrounding tissue because edema decreased. And we can definitely say that it is an improvement except that it also clearly clinically well, even better, no complaints at all. And that the clinical picture thus goes hand in hand with what the scan shows. But the battle is not won. There is definitely tumor tissue but the train is clearly on its return and it is important to see that.
Comment Text 5:
The visible decline in tumor size and amount of edema is good news. Especially since two months before that Dirk had stopped the Temodal the advice of his oncologist because Dirk would have become resistant to it. With dexamethasone Dirk stops in October 2008.
Dirk says (September 2008):
Well I'm not unhappy because of the situation. There was less water anyway. So the activity was actually decreased and the size. So given the nature of the tumor, I am satisfied .. And yes with a glioblastoma you have nothing to want. And he is big. So says Dr. Gorter too, but not so impossible. So we just continue to go good. That makes me feel good.
Comment Text 6:

Dirk meets regularly in Cologne, other cancer patients who benefit from the approach of Dr. Gorter and also gives him more and more hope. Also because he feels physically better and better.
Dirk says (February 2009):
I'm here now around 120 times was so serious I get my new scan next week. But I'm not worried about this because I feel good. Less alone in my memory, but I think that's normal. I guess I feel my good prospects despite the forecast.

On the MRI scan in March 2009 with Dirk seems all tumor disappeared.
Robert says (in March 2009 when scanning images on your computer and together with Dirk and Mildred):
This is the scan of end March 2009: and if we look at the scan, we see nothing more there. Only there is Slightly thickened. This is scar tissue but it will continue because if a large tumor disappear, so that's been an injury. That may still be less but will not disappear but you can well live with and probably never cause problems. Anyway it's still a scar. You have to go to live with. And my advice is that after four months to one last scan. Is it then so that they see nothing, no tumor activity, no edema, you swallow long no medication, I think we can really say all conscience, there is complete remission is completely gone and it would be useful 1 more year to every 3 to 6 months scan. Therefore we can now say that you already again maps to the future to make. Because if the next time so it is very unlikely in our experience, it still comes back.
Dirk says: Haha the best news of all time
Robert says: yes, we will have a plan that we will treat you less and less but I still have that you occasionally for local hyperthermia, and that we are 3 to 6 months once again give dendritic cells but I want to see less often.
Dirk says (March 2009):
I can only say I am very relieved that literally and figuratively, and summer comes again in my life.
Mildred says (March 2009):
Yes, I've actually the last three or four months had the feeling, it's certainly no worse, I think it's just for entertainment. Medically, I do not know much but it seems stable now and he gets things of itself. He is again more Dirk. It is not the zombie from the beginning. He is another person who actively participates. In any case, at home and in the relationship. Yes I am very happy.
Dirk says:
And me.

Dirk with an inoperable brain tumor that grade IV seems to disappear completely like a miracle. Yet in recent years alongside Dirk several patients with grade IV brain tumor in the Medical Center Cologne yet been in a prolonged total remission. The combination of electro-hyperthermia and dendritic cell as Dr. Gorter appears to apply them effectively address many forms of cancer. Also of brain tumors. Hyperthermia precedes the dendritic cell plays an important role. The electro-hyperthermia equipment in the Medical Center Cologne is used for local hyperthermia when used correctly because no burns and can be very targeted by a simple procedure at any body part can be used. So even on the head.
Tomas said as he bed of Dirk is / is: In this case we talk about electro-hyperthermia. This means that in contrast to whole-body heat only the tumor very focused. That is because this form of hyperthermia is not only an easily accessible area in the abdomen can reach the lungs but we can handle and head. This is an important point. More importantly, the patient receives at all hyperthermia. Whether electro-static or low frequency radio sources has happened is not important. Is essential that hyperthermia given in addition to the standard treatments.
Comment Text 9:
That hyperthermia for treatment of brain tumors may have a value, a recent phase III study showed that hyperthermia significantly better results on disease-free survival and additional radiotherapy and / or Temodal in brain tumors.
Thomas says to bed Dirk:
The last year we at ASCO, the largest cancer conference that takes place every year in America, we have presented a study conducted in several hospitals with over 200 patients with hersenutumoren. And this study has irrefutably demonstrated that we are facing very much the standard approach for patients can do. After five years of all participating patients were still alive 11%. Which is usually not the case. Or rather, a standard approach never occurs.
Comment Text 9:
Dirk and Mildred have never had doubts about their choice of treatment in the Medical Center Cologne. Even though she never expected that Dirk still could restore ..
Dirk says in view of November 2009 by Teun: yes I am optimistic
March 2009 Dirk says:
Our feeling was actually the first time we came in here, along with some friends, we all had a good feeling from the start, no sense of disquiet. And of course we were critical of it, we are really critiqued, but distrust, a healthy distrust that had been done fairly quickly disappeared and never came back.
Mildred says (March 2009): I've never really had. We entered the conversation, the first meeting with Robert and that was so convincingly also. He has given no expectations. Just indicated, we go for a long time with quality. He never said that I found healing and most importantly, he has never made false promises.
Dirk says: He never promised anything
Mildred says, and I've never had a moment in that whole peridoe I thought, I doubt the treatments or to what is said. No, I've just seen more and more an acknowledgment.
Dirk says: I'm also a bit of exercise were gone. The first steps to put back to running. Working one day a week. Last night again for being the first spin. So yes.
Mildred says: Most importantly, I think he said he said that science has shown, when using the dendritic cells, this progress is in many cases no relapse has been and that gives confidence.
Comment Text 11:
Afterwards, the health insurance paid a portion of the treatments in Cologne. More information about dendritic cell therapy and hyperthermia can be found on the website of the Medical Center Cologne.
