Take honey before and during irradiation period of the mouth and throat cancer significantly reduces the side effects (mucositis) of radiation. Article updated July 14, 2011

July 14, 2011: Personal comment on the following studies: would the people and organizations that give money to the KWF be aware that rarely or never charges the KWF is spent on middle and non-toxic treatments, but for the most part new and pointless chemotherapy alone while the drug companies sponsor?

Taking honey before and after the irradiation of tumors in mouth and throat cancer shows a significantly positive effect on countering the side effects of radiation (mucositis - mucosal damage). This shows a small but randomized trial in 40 patients with tumors in the mouth and throat.

In this randomized clinical trial, 40 patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiation therapy were randomly divided into two groups. Twenty patients received honey, while both the study and control groups according to standard protocol were irradiated for tumors in the mouth and throat. The control group received a saline wash to participate.

The patients in the honey group were instructed to 20 ml of honey to take 15 minutes before irradiation would start and then at intervals of 15 minutes to six hours after irradiation. In the control group, patients were instructed to rinse with 20 ml saline and after radiation. Patients were evaluated weekly for progression of mucositis using the Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale (OMAS). Data were analyzed using the independent t-test, Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests.

Results: A significant reduction of mucositis in patients call the honey was found compared to controls. The researchers conclude that honey is a cheap and patient-friendly way to combat mucositis in radiotherapy. See other arttikelen about positive effects of honey.

AIM: Radiation-induced mucositis is an early effect of head and neck radiotherapy. Mucositis can cause ulcers, and Patients May experience pain and dysphasia All which need treatment. The aim of this study is to Evaluate the effect of pure natural honey on radiation induced mucositis.

METHODS AND MATERIALS: In this randomized single blind (examiner blind) clinical trial 40 patients with head and neck cancer radiation to the oropharyngeal mucosa Requiring were randomly Assigned to two groups. Twenty Patients Assigned to the study group received honey, while Both the study and control groups received standard head and neck radiation therapy based on a standard protocol. Patients in the study group were instructed to take 20 ml of honey 15 minutes before radiation therapy, then again at intervals of 15 minutes and six hours after radiation. Patients in the control group were instructed to rinse with 20 mL of saline before and after radiation. Patients were Evaluated weekly for progression of mucositis Using the Oral Mucositis Assessing Scale (OMAS). Data were Analyzed Using the independent t test, Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests.

RESULTS: A significant reduction in mucositis among honey-Patients received compared with controls (p = 0.000) occurred.

CONCLUSION: Within the limits of this study the results showed the application of natural honey was effective in managing radiation induced mucositis.

CLINICAL Significance: Natural honey is a product with rich nutritional Qualities That Could be a pleasant, simple, and economic modality for the management of radiation mucositis.
