Experience Story Mouth and throat cancer. Marga
I am a woman of 53 years, married and have two children aged
22 (boy) and 19 (girl) years, and both are studying in the family
home living.
On May 25, 1999 I received, since a few months after I was suffering from
slight sore throat and the doctor had referred to the ENT specialist (Diaconessenhuis Voorburg, where I worked), the result:
throat cancer. That same afternoon I was by him referred to a
ENT physician in the Westeinde Hospital in The Hague. Again, the same diagnosis is confirmed by testing, which also spread to his neck were noted. Primary esophageal cancer was also discovered.
Following this I was referred to an oncologist in
LUMC (Leiden University Medical Center, formerly Leiden University Hospital). The LUMC is working closely with the Westeinde Hospital regarding tumors in the head / neck area. There was further investigation and carried my case was discussed in an Oncology Group.
The surgeon told me not to surgery of the esophagus in
eligible, since irradiation of the neck not the operation
chance of success. The only option was chemotherapy followed by
radiation. I would have a survival rate from 3 months to 1 year.
After much deliberation and a second opinion in the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam, I started chemotherapy in the LUMC.
On July 6 started the first treatment. In total 4 treatments I endured,
I got more and more problems with the hand / foot syndrome (feeling
palms and soles on fire). Physically, I consistently higher
reverse, producing a fifth treatment is not considered meaningful.
Subsequently, after extensive research on Oct. 12 launched the first irradiation, after a stomach tube before it was applied. There were 32 more radiation treatments to follow (26 November last irradiation).
All in all I have endured this treatment well, albeit with the necessary cause inflammation of the throat, nausea and
fatigue.
Unfortunately, my salivary glands are affected by radiation, which
permanent injury if not more saliva is produced, which is the
eating difficult. However, it was found that both the throat and esophagus "clean" were, which was obviously a great result. The gastric tube was finally removed.
After a few months 'good' had gone, I got problems again. After another extensive study, a recurrence of throat cancer identified.
A "serious" about 7 hour operation (with command zwaailap) was the only thing the medical profession could offer me. I had no choice, and on May 8, 2000 was the aforementioned operation performed, preceded by again placing a stomach tube. After an uptake of 5 weeks, longer than expected because of problems with the stoma, followed eventually discharged from hospital.
Long-term rehabilitation with physiotherapy followed for arm, shoulder and neck,
necessary because of the fact that my right pectoral muscle was used to
the right mouth / throat half to fill.
It has to me my heart is not the surgery itself, but rehabilitate me
huge disappointing. To date I still have a stomach tube,
which I hope it does not take too long to remove.
The food is very difficult: no appetite, no saliva, and just thick
Liquid products can I eat it like porridge, yoghurt, powdered food.
However, in order to get the much needed calories, I drink daily
supplementation (Resource shaker). The anatomy of the right shoulder and neck has changed, so I'm very limited in the use of my right arm and physical therapy is still necessary. Fortunately, I have been driving, which the first few months was not possible.
Also, during operation "accidentally" hit a nerve of the tongue,
so the right half paralyzed tongue, which is noticeable when speaking
and food which I "lose" in the right half mouth.
I am also still under control in the dental surgeon and has several times a day my jaw with spatulas "stretch" to my mouth enough to open.
All in all not a nice residual symptoms, but a positive attitude and
my two "Bloedjes" of children ensure that there is enough of
life to enjoy.
