12 July 2011

ZonMw wants more scientific research into complementary interventions in health care.

In recent years, more and more people make use of here. Some patient groups, such as children, psychiatric and palliative patients even to an increase of 60%. "Although the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of complementary health care interventions gently begins to grow, it is still completely inadequate across the Board," said Henk Smith, Director of ZonMw. Research is needed in the interest of the quality and safety of care. On the one hand, to give a good underpinning effective additional treatments (costs), but also to the unnecessary use of non-effective or harmful interventions.

Examples of complementary interventions are homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, music therapy, Hypnotherapy and mind-body interventions such as mindfullnesstherapie. It is therefore a many different types of care and treatments, all of which are outside the domain of the regular care or treatment and this additional biomedical or pretend to be supportive.

Sent on 8 July the identification notes ' Effectiveness of complementary health care interventions ZonMw ' to the Ministry of health (VWS). This gives an impetus for more thorough descriptions ZonMw scientific research into this type of health care interventions.
